adam ant - friend or foe . 1982

adam ant was crazy . but awesome . words can't really describe it so if you've never seen him it's worth the 15 seconds it'll take to google it.

every time i put this record on in my shop i can see people start moving . it's almost impossible not to dance to 'goody two shoes' , 'place in the country' or the title track.

it's pop for sure but with enough left of center stuff to keep it really interesting . standout songs for me are ' crackpot history ' and 'something girls '

I got into this record after making several mix cds for various parties (5 buddies + 80s music + whatever girls we could convince to drop in before they went out to a club) in high school. After getting beyond the album's single "Don't You Want Me," I realized that The Human League, and the whole new wave movement was much more than the 3 minute radio hits we tend to remember now. Most people view new wave as being "punk with synths," but the arrangements on "Dare!" were not only ahead of their time, they expanded the definition of music by experimenting with tones and other traditionally amusical sounds. The two most "radio friendly" tracks, "Don't You Want Me" and "Love Action" feature heavily syncopated and opposing rhythm synth lines, with layer upon layer of leads above them. "Dare" also relied entirely on a Linn drum for the percussion, a sound that has since become synonymous with 80s pop. On the more experimental side "Seconds" is an epic (and I do not use that word lightly), relentlessly driving song about the assassination of JFK. Lacking a memorable melody, it's a great example of synth tones taking centre stage. For all of it's technical attributes, this record is undeniably danceable. It perfectly captures the evolution of The Human League from a punk/avante garde/electronic band into a commercial pop band. And while some purists may prefer Heaven 17, "Dare!" more than made it's mark on pop music, and my Friday nights in 2001.

david bowie - low

Although it's hard to say which David Bowie album is my favourite, this one certainly falls in the top three. If you're not already a Bowie fan, you may not get this record right away. It's not at all poppy like his more familiar 80s work, and far from the "classic rock" sound of his earlier records.

Part of the 'Berlin Trilogy', Bowie, Tony Visconti and Brian Eno channelled their inner Kraut-rocker, writing songs about heroin trips and depression. A great party record! The record's single 'Sound and Vision' is a testament to how far from the mainstream they strayed. Hot, overdriven vocals over a processed drum kit, and a wall of counter opposing rhythms. Lyrics like "Pale blinds drawn all day/Nothing to do/nothing to say" give the feeling of loss, yet the music keeps your head bobbing.

Bowie expresses himself like never before on the album's second half, as songs like 'Art Decade' and 'Weeping Wall' take you on an atmospheric journey. This half is among my favourite 'wallowing in self pity' music. I mean, come on... it can't all make you want to dance!

marianne faithful - broken english . 1979

i've had this record for a very long time and only recently started giving it the attention it deserves. i was reading something about the stones last week and the article mentioned the revenge filled mick / keith / marianne love triangle . reading about her made me want to go back and spend some time with this album. i'm glad i did.

the bass line / key hook in the title track is wicked and sounds like it could have given birth to the strokes 'juicebox' 30 years later . the entire record has a smoky , dark feel to it punctuated by weird guitar and keyboard lines at just the right time. lyrically it's intense and her voice only adds to it.

bonus . on side two she does a great cover of that green day song 'working class heroes' .

Regatta de Blanc - The Police (1979) Their second album, Regatta de Blanc is a great combination of atmospheric songs ('Walking on the Moon') mixed with beautifully crafted pop gems ('Message in a Bottle'). The album is consistently expansive yet remains cohesive. The drony piano-driven 'Does Everyone Stare' is reminiscent of the Beatles, but is somehow followed quite nicely by the Zeppelin-esque 'Contact'. Sting's playful yet sincere lyrics ('this bed's too big without you') are complemented nicely with Andy Summers' hypnotic guitar lines. And Stewart Copeland's brilliant work on the hi-hats is repeatedly awing. Often clumped together due to their fusion of punk and reggae, I always found The Police to be more interesting than The Clash (but don't tell Ryan). Under-rated album gem: 'Bring on the Night'
